All people should read "The Fundamental Trues"
Lakota Belief and Ritual
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (December, 1991)
Authors: James R. Walker, Raymond J. Demallie, and Elaine A. Jahner
Average review score:

Primary research materials; an essential history
Lakota Belief and Ritual is a book rich in oral history. It was recorded at the a time when there were First Nations members who had the personal experiences of a lifetime and whose tradition was an oral tradition. Dr. Walker (a physician and anthropologist) collected and preserved this oral history in the face of the destruction of most First Nation's cultures through the intervention of the European cultures.

The narratives are all excellent and there are 90 + documents containing those first-person narratives along with several photographs.

The Bison Books edition has an extensive (and very valuable) series of appendices, including an extensive (modern) bibliography.

The original Walker papers (or the majority, at any rate) are now part of the Colorado Historical Society collection.

A first rate piece of work by the editors, DeMallie & Jahner, working from the primary materials created and preserved by Dr. Walker and his family.

An invaluable work. This book -or at least excerpts- should be part of any text on U.S. History. The inclusion of First Nations culture in our textbooks is rare, indeed.

True story of a medical doctor that became a Wicasa Wakan
James Walker went to the Pine Ridge reservation in 1896 (as a Christian) to serve the indians as a Medical Doctor.

18 years later when he left the reservation; he had adopted the Sioux form of Spirituality, and had become a wicasa wakan (holy man). He was trained by George Sword, and other medicine and holy people.

Some of this material is very dry, and dificult reading because a large part of the book (expecially the rituals and myths) were translated into English from the Language of the Sioux. But if you have a sincere wish to understand this form of Spirituality; this book is well worth reading.

I do wish to confirm one statement in this book by wicasa wakan (George Sword). "Any pipe can be used in a sacred manner" I could NOT agree more! I have used a meerschaum pipe, a pipestone (catlinite) pipe, and a briar pipe. The condition of the heart and mind is far more important than the kind of pipe one uses.

I encourage questions and comments about my reviews; Two Bears.

Wah doh Ogedoda (We give thanks Great Spirit)

Lakota Belief and Ritual
This book is the litmus test for subsequent interpretations of the Lakota religion. Since the true authors felt that their culture was disappearing, they were extremely forthcoming with their information to Dr. Walker. All Lakota expressions of religion that follow this revelation of the Lakota medicine men are in fact derivative of it. Some have questioned the qualifications of the "informants" within Lakota society, but I have seen no contemporary Lakota belief or ritual that deviates from the broad strokes of this book. If you truly want to learn about traditional Lakota religion, start here, and then move on to Raymond J. DeMallie's edited texts under the title The Sixth Grandfather.

Leading Authorities on Business: Winning Strategies from the Greatest Minds
Published in Hardcover by Leading Authorities Inc. (25 February, 2002)
Authors: Marshall Goldsmith and James Belasco
Average review score:

Thought-Provoking, Instructive: Veritable Library of Advice
To really appreciate this book, it's helpful to understand what it is. The publisher, Leading Authorities, is one of the leading speakers bureaus in North America. The firm serves corporations, trade associations, and other organizations in procuring just the speaker(s) they need for their events. In this work, they interact daily with people hungry for information, advice, and inspiration-and with the people who deliver just what those audiences seek. The role of the Leading Authorities Speakers Bureau is to successfully match the right speaker with the need.

In this book, probably the first of a series, the speakers bureau has ventured into putting into print what some of their most effective speakers convey from the speaking platform. The theme of this book is business-winning strategies for business. The essays are all focused on delivering valuable, useful information and advice for the reader. Mission accomplished.

Reading this book is like experiencing a focused set of powerful professional speakers at a major convention . . . while sitting in the comfort of your living room. Well, not quite. No convention would ever give you the opportunity to receive the messages of 34 (count 'em-34) experts in one sitting. In fact, with the power in some of the chapters, it may be difficult to handle this book in one sitting!

Some of the names of the speaker-authors won't be easily recognizable. Others will be very familiar to people who know their work, have heard them speak, or work in their fields. Regardless, every one has a message for the reader. The book is organized into four parts: Toward the Future, Learning to Lead, The Impact of Technology, and Processes, Strategies, and Techniques of Leadership. There are no illustrations in this book. It's straight text . . . and straightforward. Even if you just pick a few chapters that interest you, reading this book will be worth the price.

Idea: Buy a copy of this book for each member of your leadership team. Assign a particular chapter for everyone to read at the same time, then discuss what was learned and how the knowledge can be applied in your organization. Then move to another chapter, and another. If one of the chapters seems particularly important, engage the author to speak at your management meeting.

Note: This book is not a commercial for the speakers bureau. In fact, I couldn't even find a reference to the bureau in the book. This is knowledge that I have--being a professionla speaker myself--and share with you so you can appreciate the power in this book. Definitely worth reading.

Learn a lot from the best in the business!
A great, quick read about business, leadership, technology etc from the best in the business world. Talk about a who's who in American corporate America!! A cheap way to get great advise and a free MBA in life!

Useful, practical advice
This books compiles the strategies for success of thirty-four thought leaders. The book is easy to read and includes practical suggestions on topics ranging from "Increasing Your Personal Effectiveness," to "Understanding the Requirements for Succeeding Globally," and "Building a Better Business and a Better Life."

No matter what business you're in, this book gives solid advice on how to make your business better.

Left Opposition in the U. S. 1928 31
Published in Hardcover by Pathfinder Press (December, 1981)
Author: James P. Cannon
Average review score:

Fight Against Stalinism in the U.S.
Cannon was a central founder and leader of the working class wing of the Communist Party. He was expelled for organizing opposition to the Stalinization of this party. In these writings Cannon explains the dangers of Stalinism and contrasts it with the revolutionary Marxist alternative that he and a number of other workers were in the process of founding. These writings also touch on little known but important working class struggles before the thirties, like the textile battles of the south and the mineworkers "save the union" movement. Cannon's insights on politics as well as his fine writing ability make this a good read, and an important one for those wanting to discover their roots in the fight for a revolutionary party.

courage from faith in humanity fighting for a future
In 1928 James P. Cannon is one of the central leaders of the US Communist Party known through the labor and civil liberties movement as the leader of the International Labor Defense, sent to Moscow to represent his faction in the party. In 1928 Cannon along with two of his assistants happen about Trotsky's critique of the draft program of the Communist International. They decides that these are the right ideas, and they fight for them, knowing they will lose offices, and jobs, not knowing but facing being attacked in the streets, their homes burglarized, pilloried through the labor movement from a leader of tens of thousands to a leader of a dozen. This book shows what Cannon's faith in his ideas meant and how they struggle to build a nucleus of a real movement because of the faith of ideas and in the revolutionary capacities of humanity. Anyone who thinks that Marxism had anything seriously to do with the US Communist party should read this book. Anyone who wants the courage to fight for a real future for the working and farming majority of humanity should read this book.

a chronicle of the working-class movement
The Left Opposition in the Communist Party USA, expelled in 1928, fought to maintain the traditions of the Russian Revolution against the corruptions and crimes of the bureaucracy of Stalin. This collection of writings by its central leader debates the issues at stake: the future of the USSR, the revolutionary potential in the U.S., revolutionary work in the labor unions, the South and the fight against racism, and much more.

ENJOYABLE and FUN
Legend is a wonderfully enjoyable story that will give you tears from every possible mood you can be in. Why it is listed in Amazon with Loren D. Estleman's name first is beyond me, he did not put this book together. I think it was Robert J. Randisi. At any rate, in my opinion all of the authors put in their best work. A book to be read again.

"Western anthologys are on the rise..." ReadWest.com
Another great anthology from some of the best western writers ever, and this is just a beginning. We can look forward to more great fiction from the new Western Writers of America anthology to be released next year. Great news for the genre! Meanwhile, read LEGEND!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND LEGEND!!!
I just recently finished Legend and throughly enjoyed it. I admit that I read "most" of the part about Speaks first love. Overall this was a very enjoyable western that kept me turning pages to see what would happen next. I have already passed it on to my neighbors father who enjoys westerns.

You're special because you're you.
Leo was a very normal little rabbit with a cotten tail and soft fur. The olny diffrence between him and the rest of his family is that his ears don't point straight up! To Leo's surprise, the rest of his family started laughfing at him when ever they saw him! Now Leo must find a way to make his ears stand stright up in the forest he calls home. On the way Leo learns an imporant lesson about being diffrent.

Leo the Lop
I cannot tell you how much I love this book. As a kid I remember reading it. When asked to do a review in my Children's Literature class this book instantly came to mind! This is a book that will speak to your children no matter who they are. Every child has something 'different' about them that makes them feel insecure. "Leo the Lop" is a great book to help your children feel positive about these 'differences'! I was so crushed when I found out my mom had given it to Goodwill that I ordered it here with the quickest delivery! This is a FANTASTIC book!

One of the best childrens books around
I remember a lot of books from my childhood, but this is one of my all time favorites. I've been looking all over for it since my mother accidently gave away my copy. Now I can share this story with my nephew!

Lessons from the Eastern Warriors

Average review score:

ADD EASTERN WARRIORS TO YOUR PERSONAL LIBRARY
Having studied Chinese traditional martial arts for more than fifteen years, I really appreciated the fresh perspective presented in Lessons From the Eastern Warriors. The book explains the common historic and philosophic background for many of the Chinese fighting arts. Not being a Kempo practitioner, I was not familiar with its background and enjoyed reading about its connection to Kung-Fu. Explaining and illustrating common connections between Chinese Kung-Fu and Japanese Kempo is pulled off very well by this author. There is a superb cross-section of fighting techniques chosen for inclusion in this book. My training in Ch'ang Ch'uan, Northern Shaolin and Ch'in Na gave me a special appreciation for the book's lessons. I especially like the way the author teaches how to set up and counterattack an adversary. The book's discussion on blocking and countering with the same hand are very well explained. Closing an opponent's centerline and counterattacking is a vital area of defense often neglected in other works, but extremely well done in this book by Fred Neff. Trapping an opponent is apparently either avoided or not known by other authors, because it does not show up in their works, but is well covered in this book. Lessons From the Eastern Warriors has an excellent section systematically showing several ways to trap an opponent. Another unique area of presentation in this book is its section on grappling on the ground. This subject is neglected in many martial arts discussions, despite the fact that it may be an actual danger in a fight. It seems that many martial artists prefer to pretend that they will not ever end up on the ground with an opponent. This is very foolish. I was very happy to see this book not avoid the subject, but instead give some good tips for handling fighting on the ground. One of the greatest assets of the book is its willingness to avoid the stereotypical presentation of Kung-fu and to instead cut new ground with a presentation that is both fresh and very useful. I have added Lessons From the Eastern Warriors to my small library of martial arts books and strongly suggest others do likewise.

Bridges the gap from kung-fu to kempo
Kung-fu methods are heavily taught in the book on Fighting from the Eastern Warriors. The description and illustrations in this book are exellent. The approaches to fighting are exitingly different from the normal kick-punch covered in other karate-based books. The techniques are explored and illustrated so nearly anyone should be able to learn them from reading this book. It is a great guide to Kung-fu and its Japanese derivative art of Kempo. It is highly recommended as not only an enjoyable reading, but as a guide to help build a fighting repertoire.

Leadership A to Z : A Guide for the Appropriately Ambitious
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (September, 1999)
Author: James O'Toole
Average review score:

A Good Read!
This simple but effective book is written for a general audience with interest in managerial, supervisory and leadership concepts. The book is structured as a dictionary of terms relating to leadership. While some readers may like the A-B-C division of information, others may find the book somewhat disjointed, as the format forces you to skip around from idea to idea. But then, as author James O'Toole points out, readers are invited to seek the nuggets that appeal to them, letter by letter. The connective tissue that O'Toole lays between the entries is ambition, which he says is the single pre-requisite to leadership and the one common characteristic that all great leaders share. We [...] recommend this accessible summary of basic leadership principles, although hardcore readers of leadership literature might be better off elsewhere.

O'Toole his a home run with this one!
The subtitle to this book explains the its purpose: "A Guide to the Appropriately Ambitious." The author lays out twenty-four aspects of leadership that he has gleaned from other authors and his own experience. The author's focus is not on leadership theory, but on what leaders actually do. It is a compelling read.

I liked it. This book is a compelling read. Since the author focuses on the pragmatic aspects of leadership, he gives the reader the necessary tools to hone his or her leadership skills. The format of the book, although difficult to follow at first, lends itself to quick review. Successful leaders will find this book helpful as a review of the principles which brought them success. For those who wish to become leaders, this is the best resource I have found. It clearly states what leadership is all about in a format that is easy to read and digest. The "no holes barred" approach to illustrations helps the reader see and understand the principles elucidated as O'toole names the names and tells the stories of corporate and non-profit leaders whose successes and failures he demonstrates.

Aside from a good review of the principles that I am trying to instill into my life, it has helped me in three ways. First, the discussion between strategic change and change management was very helpful. The author points out that every organization is faced with constant change, and change cannot be managed. Change management is short sighted and issue orientated, whereas strategic change looks for the long term and seeks to make change a part of the culture of the organization. Second, I appreciated the author's repeated emphasis on the courage of leadership. Being a leader puts one at risk, and as O'Toole succinctly demonstrates, most "leaders" would rather play it safe. Unless the leader is willing to risk failure and humiliation, he or she will never taste the fruits of leadership. Third, I will be using this book as a primer for my staff to teach them leadership principles. There are few books with such broad scope as this one.

How does this book help a pastor of a small church? Some church leaders would balk at this book because the author is looking for the "appropriately ambitious" and deals with secular business. Yet, leadership is leadership. If we as pastors do not have the engine of ambition beating in our hearts for the gospel of Christ, what in the world are we doing in the pulpit? And as long as our Bible Colleges and seminaries ignore the leadership issue and keep training in the "pastoral model", the church in the USA will continue its decline. Leadership is the key to turning the seeming inevitable decline in church attendance around. Until our seminaries and Bible colleges teach leadership, pastors will have to turn to the business community for help.

Pick and Choose
How to describe a book with this title? It is not a dictionary. It is not a sequential narrative. It is not an anthology of aphorisms or portions of previous publications. It is not a manual. (However, its title does make much more sense than would those of other books such as Chicken Soup for Dummies or Stan Laurel on Management.) What Leadership A to Z provides is "a guide for the appropriately ambitious." O'Toole believes that more can be learned from what effective leaders do (and how they do it) than from their personality and character. What do all effective leaders seem to have in common? What O'Toole characterizes as "appropriate ambition." Note the modifier. All of us have ambitions. (The most effective leaders assuredly do.) Within effective organizations, most of those involved seem to have both personal and organizational ambitions which nourish and sustain each other. At least these ambitions are not mutually-exclusive or even incompatible. Within the most effective organizations, these ambitions are almost (not quite) identical. Moreover, most of the time -- day to day -- most of those involved are leaders of leaders. That is, sharing ambitions which are appropriate to them as well as to their organization, together functioning as what Noel Tichy has described as a well-designed, carefully-maintained "leadership engine."

How should this book be read? One option is to read it sequentially from A to Z. That will work. However, my personal preference (and suggestion) is to re-visit the Contents (pages ix-xi) whenever there is a question to be answered, a problem to be solved, or a new perspective needed. You may find that the answer will reveal itself after you read (let's say) some/all of B, H, J, and T; perhaps reading some/all of A, M, R, and W will suggest a solution; as for gaining a new perspective, I often hop around, in and out, back and forth. Sometimes I locate or formulate one...sometimes I don't.

The book's content is rock-solid. The writing style (vintage O'Toole) has snap, crackle, and pop. The selection of individual items was, of course, arbitrary but the material seems cohesive...perhaps because, directly or indirectly, all of the items help to demonstrate "appropriate ambition" in action. Another way to approach the book is to pretend that you have just entered O'Toole's General Store. Perhaps you have a specific item in mind. Or perhaps you are just "looking around." Fine. Take your time. Check out the merchandise. No obligation to buy anything today. Come back again another time. You are always welcome. Next visit, perhaps, you'll need what you saw last time in Aisle 5. It's nice to know it's there. It's nice to know that some much else is also there, waiting to be of help to you.

Good Graduate Book
This book is good for the High School Graduate because the simple metaphors and stories make this book clear in a world full of obscur rules and references. I liked this book because it did speak in straight forward terms. An older audience may see this as a dribble of old advice, but to a younger man this is new wisdom.

A lot of common sense per square inch!
I have been reading this book (an OLD copy!) once a year since I was a senior in high school, at the behest of my father who was one of the wisest persons I've ever known. The old man exhibits a rare understanding of human nature, and is able to pack more common sense into every square inch than too many of us gain in a lifetime. I have found it to be a great gift for high school or college graduates, for young people trying to find themselves, for some older folks still grappling with some basic issues. A great book for your personal library, and to share!

2nd Best Collection of Wisdom
My grandfather gave me a 1905 printing of this book and told me that, in his opinion, this was the second best collection of wisdom he'd ever read, next to the Bible. After a reluctant reading, I agree wholeheartedly.

Excellent, a must buy.
Doesn't matter where you live, people are the same wherever you go.

Truly Touching.
I picked this book up while on vacation, and wanted to see what other people thought of it as well. This is an amazing portrait of a community. This reminds me so much of the community where I grew up that I can't imagine others won't find the same where ever they may live. The stories, the people and the history are so real and vivid I feel as though I lived through all this myself. Bravo !

It made me laugh, it made me cry
I live in this area (the area the book comes from), but it was full of surprises. Who would imagine that simple history could be so rich. Some chapters had me laughing aloud, others -- especially the one "Citizen Abroad" -- actually made me cry. Looking back through this "people's history," it is amazing how much technology changes, and how little humans do. A great book.
